This pre-purchase examination revealed that the signature, H.O.Tanner had been added over an entire layer of overpaint and over the original signature. The newer signature of H.O.Tanner, a late 19th, early 20th century African American painter, would have made the painting more valuable. As a result of the examination, the purchaser made an informed decision and saved a considerable amount of money.
